Abandoned for over 60 years, the historic Ellis Island hospital is now open for guided tours. See the remains of a state-of-the-art hospital built during the height of immigration in the early 20th century.

This massive complex of twenty-nine buildings, including staff residences and a morgue, is where many immigrants were treated before they could begin their new lives in America. Our expert guides will lead you on a 90-minute walking tour of the hospital grounds as you step back in time and explore the abandoned eerie wards of this incredible historic site.

What You Should Know...

Open: Year-Round

Hours: Closed Today. Opens Fri

10:30am - 4:00pm, Daily

Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes.

Dress for the weather and prepare for the conditions outside. The historic buildings do not have air conditioning or heating. 

Tours are offered every day of the year, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

All participants must be 10 years of age or older and will be provided with a hard hat for the tour.

The unrestored buildings do not comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements at this time. Participants must be able to climb stairs.

The Ellis Island Infectious & Contagious disease hospital was built utilizing healthcare research conducted by Florence Nightingale nearly 50 years prior to its design.

The wards were designed to promote adequate light and air and space, which significantly reduced the mortality rate.

Many of the doctors and nurses who worked at the hospital also lived on Ellis Island.
