The Ellis Island Infectious & Contagious disease hospital was built utilizing healthcare research conducted by Florence Nightingale nearly 50 years prior to its design.
The wards were designed to promote adequate light and air and space, which significantly reduced the mortality rate.
Abandoned in 1954, the Ellis Island Infectious & Contagious disease hospital is still the largest pavilion style hospital in the western hemisphere.
